It is horrifying
to me that Americans, who have endured the socio and economic havoc wreaked
on our country as a result of Bush administration policies could, for a even
a micro-millisecond, consider voting for John McCain, who has openly
demonstrated, by his voting record and economic platform, that he is
determined to continue the fatally disastrous policies of the Bush
administration.
Senator McCain has made it plain that he has no intention of correcting the
gross economic inequities and wealth disparities that have crippled our
country and instead disparagingly refers to the direction of much-needed
economic relief to the middle class and poor as “class warfare.” McCain
openly admits that he plans to continue Bush’s policies of directing
exorbitant economic relief to the wealthiest of Americans and corporations
under the guise that economic benefits will trickle down to the middle class
and the poor. This flawed economic theory has been exacerbated by unfair
trade agreements which allow American corporations to outsource American
jobs and allows the “beneficial” trickle to completely bypass America’s
middle class and poor and instead flows to countries where they are able to
exploit low wage workers and weak environmental protection.
To continue this abhorrently immoral economic policy will ensure
catastrophic economic consequences for average Americans as the result of
becoming unemployed, uninsured or losing their homes to foreclosure. PLEASE
do not cast your vote for Senator McCain, whose policies, like the Bush
administration’s, blatantly ignore the needs of working Americans.

During the recent
political campaigning, many charges have been made, seemingly designed to
question the patriotism of those who have views that are different than
their own.
Some of these charges are despicable, all are divisive. This seems to be an
old tactic, tried and true, wrap yourself in the Stars and Stripes, and
accuse others of being unpatriotic. Patriotism, however, is not that simple.
It is, in fact, a much more complex subject than first glance would
indicate. It is not a subject that is easily defined, and can, at times, be
difficult to discuss in an objective manner. It is, in many instances, a
very subjective matter. One person’s definition of a patriot may differ
greatly from that of another. An example: My dictionary defines a patriot as
“One who loves his country and upholds its interests.” Sounds simple. This
simple definition, however, cuts much too wide a swath to suit me, and I am
uncomfortable with it. It does not take into consideration whether one’s
country’s interests and endeavors are honorable or dis-honorable.
Were we to accept this definition, we would have to accept as patriots:
members of the Gestapo, Kamikaze pilots, Viet Cong guerillas, members of the
K.G.B., members of the Republican Guard and many others. Can it be
truthfully said that none of them loved their country, or that none of them
upheld their country’s interests? I think not! Did not many of them give
their all in support of their country’s interests, although these interests
were less than honorable? Should we not attempt to re-define just what a
patriot is?
One can certainly love his country, yet refuse to support his country’s
endeavors, with clear conscience, when these endeavors are less than
honorable or destructive to the rights of man. Those who serve in the
military are bound by duty, honor and oath to obey lawful orders given to
them by their superiors. For those who are not in the military, however, a
responsible and honorable motto for a true patriot might be: “Do that which
is right for your country, not all that your country asks you to do.”

To The Editor:
Peter Bolster is hoping to be elected a Representative to the New Hampshire
House from Alton and District 5 (which includes Barnstead). How fortunate we
are to have a person with time, experience and willingness to serve.
After a forty year career in the ministry Peter has retired. He has
continued to be active in Alton town affairs. In addition to being a
Selectman, he is President of Alton Community Services. He started an after
school program for working mothers. In all these activities he shows
open-mindedness and special interest in helping area people.
It is important to Peter to maintain a balance in conservation and
development. He feels we must work on a sensible educational program for
funding.
We are indeed fortunate to have Peter Bolster offering his time and efforts
to work for us in Concord. Please vote for Peter for the New Hampshire House
of Representatives on November 4. Thank You.

Letter To The

Dear Editor:
Rarely have I ever been as enthusiastic about a candidate as I am about
re-electing Carol Shea-Porter to Congress. She has been unwaivering in her
support for the middle class and for veterans, for “the rest of us” back
here at home. Her funds come from the grass roots, not special interests,
and that’s who she looks out for. What a privilege it is to have this smart,
independent woman representing us in Congress. She has earned our continued
support by keeping her promises and working hard on our behalf. Please join
me in voting for Carol Shea-Porter, New Hampshire’s first-ever
Congresswoman, on November 4.
