New Barnstead Thrift Shop and Food Pantry
The new Barnstead Thrift Shop and Food Pantry is now
open at its new location next to Bosco Bell on RT 28.
It is hard to believe that just one month ago we were
bare to the walls and now we are full with wonderful
gently used items. The citizens of Barnstead have been
so supportive of this project. This is the very first
thrift shop ever in Barnstead. So keep supporting our
first and only thrift shop. The funds are used to
support the Food Pantry, pay the rent and help those who
need a little extra from time to time.
We are open Thursdays and Fridays from 12 till 5 p.m.
and Saturdays from 12 till 4 p.m., Saturdays from 10
a.m. till 12 noon are food panty times. Any time you see
the OPEN sign on, come on in and take a look around.

Barnstead Library Ends Summer Reading Program
The Summer Reading Program at the Oscar Foss Memorial
Library has officially ended. Our last event was a
fun-filled morning on August 16th with performers Steve
Blunt and Joseph Carringer.
Steve and Joseph coordinated their programs with this
year’s summer theme G’Day for Reading. There were lots
of Australian stories, drum playing, songs on the
guitar and terrific demonstration by Joseph playing the
didgeridoo. This program was made possible by a grant
from the New Hampshire State Library and donations from
Byrne Foundation, CHILIS, Cogswell Benevolent Trust and
the N.H. Library Association.
We would like to thank the following people and
organizations for helping to make the summer reading
program a GREAT success. Thanks to Donald Kirkham for
providing all sorts of Australian artifacts to make our
display go outstanding. Thanks to Blueberry Station for
donating ice cream gift certificates awards and to Megan
Ebba for making some very personable and spunky koalas.
We would also like to thank Teresa Taylor of Salty Dog
Pottery for donating a beautiful mug for the raffle for
our adult readers. Lots and lots of tickets were
deposited and the drawing was held at the ending
program. Jessica Brown was the lucky winner!
Don’t forget, if you have not picked up your Reading
Program certificates, etc. They here waiting for you at
the library.
This year we had 92 children participate in the Reading
Program. As the children recorded their books at the
Library, they added a eucalyptus leaf to feed the hungry
koalas that were climbing the wall of bamboo.

Living Democracy At Town Hall
On Saturday, August 16th, 2008, thirty - two residents
of 15 communities from New Hampshire and Maine gathered
in the Barnstead Town Hall to participate in a day long
Democracy School, hosted by the Citizens Of Barnstead
for A Living Democracy (COBALD).
Thomas Linzey, Esq., of the Community Environmental
Legal Defense Fund, (CELDF) a non - profit, public
service law firm in Chambersburg, PA, was the guest
lecturer, assisted by Ellen Hayes, of Advocates for
Community Empowerment (ACE) and Gail Darrell, (COBALD).
This was the 183rd Daniel Pennock Democracy School to be
held in the country and the second one for the town of
Barnstead, whose first school was held at Locke Lake in
2005.
Daniel Pennock Democracy School teaches a new organizing
strategy for communities, by first uncovering the hidden
history of the usurpation of people¢s decision-making
authority. Democracy School explores the limits of
conventional regulatory organizing and offers a new
organizing model that helps citizens reverse the
usurpation by corporations of the rights of communities,
people, and the earth.
Citizens from NH and Maine who were concerned about
water protection gathered to learn the history behind
why Barnstead passed the Water Rights and Local Self -
Government Ordinance. Participants spent the day sharing
common experiences as well as a delicious array of
homemade quiche, salads, vegetable soup, breads, freshly
- brewed coffee and deserts.
The day’s event ended with a question and answer
session, followed by adjournment at 5pm. Next Democracy
schools to be held this fall in September, October and
November.
