Lyndon State College Television Studies Students
The
College Broadcasters, Inc., has announced the awards for 2009, and
Lyndon State College, Lyndon Center, VT, has been named for three.
NewsLINC, a new web-based news service, is a finalist for Best Student
Media Web Site, a public service announcement for the Lyndonville-based
H.O.P.E. is a finalist for Best PSA and LSC-TV News7 is a finalist for
Best Newscast for “Election ’08,” broadcast Nov. 5, 2008. This
recognition landed Lyndon in the top four of all colleges in of the
categories in which the students placed.
The
national recognition comes very early in NewsLINC’s history. The website
debuted in January 2009 under the co-direction of Assistant Professor
Meaghan Meachem and Director of Broadcast Operations Darlene Bolduc-Ballou.
TVS students Jeff Bonneau (Woodstock, Conn.), Joshua Bryant (Salisbury,
N.H.), Tim Cappalli (N. Kingstown, R.I.), Courtney Rosemond, (Center
Barnstead, N.H.), Steve Shannon (Stratham, N.H.), Christopher Siwek
(Bethel, Conn.) and Paul Snyder (Stoughton, Mass.) posted updated and
enhanced versions of stories from the News 7 newsroom as well as new
content and information.
Broadcast Meteorology students Lawrence Hayes (St. Johnsbury), John
Hickey (Billerica, Mass.), Ian Oliver (Westport, Mass.), Adam Rutt
(Nazareth, Pa.) and Tim Studebaker (Lynn, Mass.) produced web versions
of their television forecasts as part of the NewsLINC information
package under the direction of Assistant Professor Jay Shafer and
Adjunct TVS Professor Dan Dowling. The website’s name honors Lyndon’s
first interactive communications effort - the LINC Project - that began
30 years ago this fall. Joining NewsLINC as national finalists in the
best student media website category are sites at Ithaca College (radio
and tv) and the University of Minnesota (radio).
News 7
was a CBI national finalist for Best Student Newscast in 2003, 2005 and
2006. Other finalists this year include student productions from the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of North
Dakota and Ithaca College. News 7 is the only daily student newscast in
the category. UND airs once a week, UNC twice a week and Ithaca’s
student newscast airs 3 times a week.
The
public service announcement “H.O.P.E.” was produced by Adam Largess
(Bethel, Me.) as part of Television Studies Department’s Post Production
class taught by Darlene Bolduc-Ballou. The PSA was a dramatic portrayal
of the outreach effort conducted daily by the H.O.P.E. organization in
Lyndonville.
Notice
of the national honors comes as the Television Studies Department is
putting the finishing touches on a proposal to establish the Vermont
Center for Community Journalism. The VCCJ will provide the structure for
a new “converged” curriculum that will teach electronic journalism
students how to report, write and produce news stories about the local
community for multiple outlets, from television to web to cell phone and
beyond.
College
Broadcasters Inc. is a national organization representing students
involved in media ventures and works to ensure a commitment to education
and the student pursuit of excellence through active involvement in
electronic media.
Center Barnstead Christian Church To Hold Day Of Prayer
China -
Government Officials Instructed To Use Military Force Against Christians
to Quell Potential “Unrest” After Church Was Destroyed; Pakistan -
Christian on Run from Taliban Death Threat; Colombia - Persecuted
Christians Imprisoned; Uganda - Muslims Attack Worship Service.
Do the
true headlines above take you by surprise? Are you aware that Christians
around the world are being persecuted daily for their faith in Jesus
Christ? Do you know that when asked about their greatest need they say
it’s prayer for them to be strong in their faith and to be good
witnesses for Jesus Christ no matter the circumstances?
Center
Barnstead Christian Church has set aside this Sunday, January 3, 2010,
to pray for Christians around the world living daily under the threat of
persecution. These believers risk discrimination, imprisonment and even
death because of their active witness for Jesus Christ. Scripture
instructs us to remember those in bonds as though we were bound with
them. (Hebrews 13:3) This special day of prayer and remembrance is one
of the ways we do that. We also encourage prayer for the souls of the
oppressors, the nations that promote persecution, and those who ignore
it.
Our
hope is that this day of prayer will encourage people to be active all
year long in prayer and support for our persecuted brothers and sisters.
You are invited to join us as we pray for continued boldness and courage
for believers as they share the gospel and for hearts to be softened to
the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ. There will be one service at
9:00 AM and the persecuted church worship service will begin at 10:15 AM
this Sunday. Center Barnstead Christian Church is located next to
Barnstead’s Town Hall on Route 126. For more information please call the
church at 269-8831.
County Conservation District Twice Honored
The
Belknap County Conservation District (BCCD) was twice honored last week
at the New Hampshire Association of Conservation Districts’s (NHACD)
Annual Meeting. The first honors went to BCCD’s Coordinator, Lisa
Morin, when she received the NHACD 2009 President’s Choice Award for her
outstanding dedication to conservation districts and her volunteer
coordination of the NH Soil Judging Competition.
The
second honor for BCCD was the NHACD 2009 District Supervisor Attendance
Award. In the over sixty years BCCD has been serving Belknap
County this is just one of many times this conservation district has
received this award. “Our supervisors volunteer their time to
serve on our agency board and help guide BCCD’s conservation efforts in
the county. We are very fortunate to have, and to have had, so
many dedicated volunteers. Our Chairman, John Hodsdon, is the
second generation in his family to serve on the BCCD Board of
Supervisors.” said Morin.
BCCD,
established in 1946, helps coordinate and deliver state and federal
conservation programs at the local level in the interest of public
health, safety and welfare. It receives technical support from the
USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service and financial support from
Belknap County, grants, fundraising events and donations. For more
information please visit website
www.belknapccd.org.
NHACD
provides statewide coordination, representation, and leadership for
Conservation Districts to conserve, protect, and promote responsible use
of New Hampshire’s natural resources. The Association works
collaboratively with county Conservation Districts, federal, state, and
local agencies, nonprofits, and other conservationists as a volunteer,
tax-exempt, nonprofit organization. For more information on NHACD and
its programs please visit website
