Letter To The Editor
I wanted to extend my
gratitude to the 22 Girl Scout leaders and at
least 20 volunteers who put together this year’s
Girl Scout Camperee in New Durham at Birch Hill
Camp. Over 122 Girl Scouts from Alton and
Barnstead participated in the weekend activities
provided by their leaders and volunteers.
None of this would have been possible without
them.
As a mom of two Girl Scouts, I can’t
thank the leaders enough for the time and energy
they give selflessly to all the girls to provide
such a wonderful event and all year to their
troops. It is AMAZING! Also a big
thank you to another woman who is not currently
a leader but the service unit manager, Judy
Chase, for her boundless energy and amazing
organizational skills! A big heartfelt
thank you again to all you ladies who made this
year’s Girl Scout Camperee such a success.
Our communities are so lucky to have you all!
Thank you,
Sherri Locke

Barnstead Library Receives Local Genealogical
Database
The Oscar Foss Memorial Library in
Center Barnstead has been the recipient of a
unique genealogical database of the people of
Barnstead. People & Families of Barnstead,
NH, Earliest Days to the Present was compiled by
William John Walker of Bow Lake in Strafford,
NH. Bill began researching his Walker
ancestors decades ago and learned that his 3rd
great grandfather, William Walker, settled in
North Barnstead in the late 1790s. As Bill
continued researching, he found that his family
linked to a great many Barnstead families.
He expanded his research to anyone in Barnstead
and/or Strafford and began to build a database.
His extensive research included vital records at
the state and local levels, family cemeteries
with the help of Twink Merrill and early maps of
Barnstead, all available census records of
Barnstead from 1790 to 1880. Bill has
compiled all of his information into a computer
database linked into families by way of a
genealogical program. His detailed source
notes are included with each individual.
It
is Bill’s will to share this information with
those researching their family genealogies or
the history of Barnstead. The database, on
a read-only CD, can be viewed on a library
computer and the user can print pertinent pages
for a per page fee. There is a guide for
using the program at both beginner and advanced
levels. The Barnstead Historical Society
has helped with the implementation of the
program. There is a provision for user
commentary and correction notes. It is
intended that the historical society will keep
the database updated through corrections and
additions.
The CDs and booklets are kept with
the staff at the Library, so when you come in,
be sure to ask. We are hoping that this
database will meet the needs of many people who
are doing genealogical work.
