year the meeting will be on Wednesday, January 21, and will begin
with a Soup Supper at 6 p.m.
A good plan for young people this time of year is to be outside
until the winter clothes are soaked and then come inside and read
while they dry. The Chichester Town Library has added the following
titles to the shelves in the Children’s Section: Winnie the Pooh’s
Christmas Stories, Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner, Just as
Well, Really by Jillian Harker, Arthur Meets the President by Marc
Brown, and Alvah and Arvilla by Mary Lyn Ray.
The Chichester Town Library is sponsoring a free parenting workshop
on January 15, 6:30-8:00 PM at the Chichester Central School, on the
topic “Stormy Weather: Dealing with Everyday Stress, Anger, &
Conflict”. The presenter will be Thom Linehan, an experienced family
educator from UNH Cooperative Extension. The workshop will feature
insights into child behavior and offer a variety of strategies for
predicting, preventing, and working successfully with challenging
behaviors. Babysitting will be available for children 3 years old
and up, while parents attend the workshop. For more information,
call 798-5613 or 225-5505.
Letter To The
Editor
Dear Editor,
As I’m sure many have, for years I’d read horrifying stories about our
children in NH being physically or sexually abused, neglected or simply
abandoned by their parents or other care givers. It angered and frustrated
me at the same time. “Someone needs to do something about this,” I thought,
“someone needs to stand up for these children and protect their rights”.
It was not until I heard about and researched an organization called CASA
that I realized that the “Someone” could and should be me! CASA (Court
Appointed Special Advocates) are a group of highly dedicated volunteers who
as “Guardians ad Litems speak for the children involved in these cases. I
became a volunteer and entered a period of my life which has been
challenging, rewarding and tremendously enriching…I am a CASA!
CASA volunteers come from all walks of life. We are doctors, mechanics,
retirees, farmers, housewives, etc., but we all have one thing in common: a
love for children and an understanding that a child has every right to a
safe and healthy home. It’s not all that time consuming - many of us work
full time jobs. Most of our duties can be scheduled around our convenience.
Currently we are having a drive to increase the number of male CASA
volunteers by one hundred. Although the number of children we serve is about
equal by gender, only twenty percent of our volunteers are male.
Next time you find yourself angered and frustrated by news of a child being
abused or neglected, I ask you to think back to this letter and step up to
become an advocate for these, our children. Please check out our web site,
www.casanh.org. Thank you for your time.
