Letter
To my constituents in Allenstown, Epsom, & Pittsfield:
This was a very discouraging week in the State House for me. After a few
straightforward bills, we debated SB 144, which allows people to receive
unemployment if they leave their job for family reasons. It can’t be right
to increase benefits when the system is struggling with the highest
unemployment in years! Still, this bill passed 208-164, with the other three
Representatives from our district voting for this business-unfriendly
change. They also voted for SB 40, which requires 60 days notice for layoffs
at companies with only 80 employees, versus the 100 employees in Federal
law; and for SB 129, which increases charges for unemployment insurance.
The House then passed bills which require additional contractor disclosures
on government jobs, study the auto repair business with an eye to regulating
it, and develop a government health insurance product for “kids” up to age
26! We also allowed the Speedway to both sell alcohol and allow people to
bring their own, defeating an amendment to offer this as an option for all
venues selling alcohol.
Finally, we dealt with gay marriage, for the last time this session. The
Committee of Conference had tweaked the language in HB 73, including adding
that “Each religious organization, association, or society has exclusive
control over its own religious doctrine, teachings and beliefs regarding who
may marry within their faith.” This language passed, 198-176, and Governor
Lynch signed it before the ink was dry! This was basically a party line
vote, and the major difference from previous votes was that the Democrats
had all their “yes” voters (including three from our district) in the hall
and their few “no” votes at home.
Anyone interested in what is going on in the State House is invited to email
or call me.
