Gilmanton Fire Department
Submitted by Chief K.G. Lockwood
On Saturday, October 31, 2009, at 00:27
hrs. the Gilmanton Fire Department was dispatched to a fire alarm activation
at 206 Hemlock Drive, at 00:31 hrs. a call was received from the homeowner
indicating a smoke condition in the structure and a possible fire on the
porch.
Chief Lockwood arrived on scene at 00:31 hrs. and reported a 2-story
30x40 wood frame structure with a smoke condition. At 00:34 hrs. A fire on
the porch was confirmed and the fire had extended to the basement. At
00:34 hrs. a full structure fire assignment was requested. This brought
mutual aid from Barnstead, Belmont, and Pittsfield. The first arriving
engine company stretched a handline to the basement for extinguishment. At
00:55 hrs. the fire was placed under control with extensive overhaul and the
final companies cleared the scene at 02:50 hrs. This fire was very labor
intense with fire damage in the basement and first floor, smoke and heat
damage to the second floor, damage is estimated to be over $100,000.00.
The occupants were awaked by the properly maintained operational smoke
detectors located in the residence.
The cause of this fire is the improper disposal of woodstove ashes on
the porch. There were no injuries and the occupants and their two dogs were
going to stay at another property they own in the area.
