The Gilmanton Conservation Commission and volunteers recently completed work
on a new access trail and sign to the Cogswell Mountain Conservation Area
(CMCA) behind the Gilmanton Year-Round Library and across the road from the
Gilmanton School. This trail provides access to the 519 acre CMCA and to the
top of the middle summit of the Cogswell Mountain where there are views of
Crystal Lake and the Belknap Range to the north and Frisky Hill to the
south. The forests and wetlands are home to numerous wildlife including
deer, moose and porcupine. Two new picnic tables have recently been placed
at the summit for the public’s enjoyment. Future plans include publication
of a trail map and construction of a kiosk. Parking is available at the
school when the library is open (Tuesday and Thursday, noon-7 p.m.;
Wednesday and Saturday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.) and at the library when it is closed.

Gilmanton Community Church Food Pantry
The Gilmanton Community Church Missions Committee recently
held its annual Pantry Walk. The walk was held on the afternoon of October
4th. The weather cooperated and it was a glorious day. The walkers began at
Smith Meeting House and headed down Stone Road, onto Stage Road and ended at
the Church in the Iron Works. Along the way the walkers collected roadside
trash. Joining the walkers from the Community Church’s congregation were the
Cub Scouts of Pack 242. About 50 people in all participated in the walk.
After the walk all were welcomed to a wonderful and most delicious spaghetti
supper and wonderful homemade apple crisp for dessert at the church.
The Missions Committee and the Food Pantry committee want to say a very
big Thank You to all of the participants in this year’s walk and to all of
those who pledged food and household items. Many, many bags and boxes of
food were collected and placed in the Pantry’s cupboards to be distributed
to those in need in our community.
This is not the first time a large collection of
food has taken place in Gilmanton for donation to the GCC Food Pantry. This
past spring the Post Office workers in both Gilmanton and Gilmanton Iron
Works, collected nonperishable food items from their postal customers. Well
over 250 pounds of food was collected at that time. Then Post Mistress Pam
Brooks and Postal delivery worker, Kathy Randall are shown in the photo with
the food that was collected from both of the Post Offices. Again, the Food
Pantry Committee would like to say a very big Thank You to all who
participated in this food drive.
Boy Scout Troop 242 will also be doing a food drive soon and donating
the collected food to the GCC Food Pantry. Look for the door knob hangers
asking you to participate in this very important community service project
by the Boy Scouts.
The GCC Food Pantry has begun collecting food items for the Thanksgiving
and Christmas holiday food baskets which will be distributed to those in
need in our community. Collection boxes will again this year be placed at
the Gilmanton School and also at the Town Office at the Academy in the
Corners. If you wish to make a monetary donation you can do so by
contacting, Jane Sisti at 364-7437, Bethany Lavin at 267-1934 or
Sharon Barton at 267-5934, Food Pantry Committee members.
Jennifer Stevens Is Children’s Services Librarian At Gilmanton
Year-Round Library
Jennifer Stevens joins the staff of The Gilmanton-Year Round Library as
Assistant Librarian for Children’s Services.
Mrs. Stevens comes to the library with a variety of library and teaching
experience. She is eager to start her new position. When asked about her
upcoming role she said, “Libraries are a wonderful place full of learning
and wonderment. To bring a child into a library is to open that child
to a whole new world. My hope is that children will be encouraged to read
for life-long learning and enjoyment.”
New programming will be added as Mrs. Stevens gets acclimated. She hopes
to offer at least two after school programs. One would serve children in
kindergarten through grade 2. It would consist of thematic reading and
a take-home craft. Possible themes are Caldecott Award winning
illustrated books, genres, New Hampshire authors, etc.
A program serving children in grades 3 through grade 5 would entail
reading and writing poems and acting out short plays. Each program
would begin after school and last for about an hour.
The Ladybug Book Award voting will begin also on November 3. Each
year children, preschool through grade 3, throughout New Hampshire are
asked to vote on their new favorite picture book. Ten books have been
nominated for 2009. After the votes have been tallied by the Center for the
Book at the New Hampshire State Library, the Ladybug Book of 2009 will
be announced. Mrs. Stevens has each of the ten books on display in the
Children’s area at the Gilmanton Year-Round Library so children can look at
them and make a choice. She hopes many children will cast their votes.
With the help of Melissa Caldon, Preschool Story Times will
continue on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month at 10:15 in the morning.
It is geared for children ages 3 - 5, but all are welcome. Seasonal
books, finger plays, songs, and crafts are some of the things children can
expect. Preschool Story Time introduces children to language and literature.
It also is a wonderful time of interaction for the children and their
parents, grandparents and caregivers.
The Gilmanton-Year Round Library Association and Librarian Gary Mason
hope you will bring your children to the Library to give Mrs. Stevens a warm
welcome.
The GYRL is open Tuesday and Thursday from noon until 7 p.m. and on
Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. The Library is
located at 1385 NH Route 140 across the road from the Gilmanton School and
is handicapped accessible.
