Tax Payers Of Gilmanton
Mandatory, Pay As You Throw Or Status Quo?
Submitted By Lori Baldwin
Did you know that 47% of the Transfer Station budget, is expended to
dispose of solid waste/bagged trash?
We can reduce this amount by adopting, Mandatory, Pay As You Throw
or both at town meeting on March 17th.
Mandatory Recycling
will not create a sizeable reduction of the 47%.
"Most towns that adopt Mandatory Recycling do not experience very
large increases in recycling. Without adopting an additional program
such as PAYT, the recycling rate shouldn’t be expected to increase
by more than 5-10% which is a generous estimate. Some towns feel
they’d like to give residents a friendly challenge and see how they
do before switching to PAYT. While this is the politically safe
thing to do, it is not the most effective way to increase
recycling." (RCAP Solutions Inc.)
Pay As You Throw
(for solid waste only)
If we implement PAYT, we maximize the opportunity to reduce the 47%
while increasing recycling revenues. Revenue, generated from the
cost of bags $1-$2.00 range, will offset the cost to run the
facility. It’s the most equitable way to distribute solid waste
costs because households pay for the waste they generate. Currently
we all pay approximately $250.00 in taxes to run the facility
whether we recycle or not. People who recycle do not want to pay for
their neighbors who don’t.

"Read Across America" At Gilmanton Corner Library!
"Read Across America" is an annual reading motivation and awareness
program that called for every child in every community to celebrate
reading on March 2nd, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr.
Seuss.
Motivating children to read is an important factor in student
achievement and creating lifelong readers. Research has shown that
children who are motivated and spend more time reading do better in
school.
Dr. Seuss’s books have been translated into more than 15 languages.
At the time of his death in 1991 Dr. Seuss had written and
illustrated over 44 children’s books. Over 200 million copies have
found their way into homes and hearts around the world.
The Gilmanton Corner Library has over 25 Dr. Seuss books plus three
new DVDs: The Lorax, The Cat in the Hat and Horton Hears a Who!
Please join us in our celebration of Read Across America with Dr.
Seuss this whole month of March and receive FREE hats, tattoos,
badges and activity pages.

winners then took a qualifying test, which they submitted to the
National Geographic Society. In each of the 50 states, as well as
the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Dependents
Schools, and the U.S. Territories, the National Geographic Society
invited the students with the top 100 scores to compete at the state
level.
The 2012 New Hampshire Geographic Bee will be held at the Lloyd
Young Student Center, Keene State College, on Friday, March 30,
2012.

Geographic on DVD", and a trip to Washington, D.C., where he/she
will represent New Hampshire in the national finals at the National
Geographic Society headquarters, May 22 - 24, 2012. The first-place
national winner will receive a $25,000 college scholarship and
