Freshman Ian Gollihur of Coe-Brown Northwood Academy won first
place in this year’s One Pen Can Change the World essay contest
held by the National Writing Project in New Hampshire for his
essay on straight White male privilege. Freshman Katherine
Eastland of Souhegan High School was named runner-up for her
essay criticizing the cosmetic and clothing industries for
offering women of color too few make-up and clothing options.
Thirty-five students entered this year’s One Pen contest, which
asks students to write about their ideas related to justice. The
winners celebrated with their teachers at Plymouth State
University in Concord on April 7. (L-R) Teacher Tony Doucet and
