Headmaster David Smith of Coe-Brown Northwood Academy announced today that
Austin Frizzell, Jordan LaPointe, and Lucy Sutton have been named commended
students in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program. A letter of
commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC),
which conducts the program, will be presented by the headmaster to these
scholastically talented seniors.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized
for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in
the 2009 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students
placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who
entered the 2009 competition by taking the 2007 Preliminary SAT/ National
Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
“Recognition of academically talented students and the key role played by
schools in their development is essential to the pursuit of educational
excellence in our nation,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “The young
people named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding academic
potential by their strong performance in this highly competitive program. We
hope that this recognition will enhance their educational opportunities and
that they will continue to diligently pursue their professional goals.”

CBNA Hosts
Speaker From Uganda
Recently, Abby McNamara, a UNH representative of ChildVoice International
along with Charles, a former child soldier from Uganda, spoke to tenth grade
honors and college prep English classes as a follow up to the students’
summer reading assignment, Long Way Gone: Memoir of a Boy Soldier, by
Ishmael Beah, about a boy in Sierra Leone who was a child soldier. Charles,
speaking of his own experiences, which were similar to those depicted to in
the book, said that he and his best friend were abducted while they were
walking home from school when they were ten years old. From Uganda, they
were taken to Sudan where they were trained as soldiers for the LRA (Lord’s
Resistance Army). Charles said that he was shot when he was 11 years old.
He was a child soldier for six years, until he finally escaped the army.
From there, he went to a rehabilitation/counseling center for six weeks. He
currently works with ChildVoice International. Although it is extremely
difficult for him to get Visas, especially because he is a former child
soldier, Charles first came to the United States in the summer of 2007 and
then came back to the States this past summer. When Charles is in the US,
he stays in Nottingham, NH with the founder of ChildVoice International.
Charles has recently turned 20 years old and is currently training for
competitive cycling. He has entered several races over 500 miles long.
ChildVoice International is an organization that works in war-torn countries
with local non-government organizations to assist children of war, restoring
the voices of children who have been silenced by the horrors they have
experienced. UNH representative Abby McNamara also said that the problem of
conscripting child soldiers for the LRA in Uganda was the worst humanitarian
issue for the most unrecognized war in history. In response to this
program, students from Coe-Brown are in the process of starting a CBNA
chapter of ChildVoice International. For more information visit
