Resident Participates In Medical School Ceremony
Tyler P.
Martin, son of Scott and Jane Martin of Northwood, a first year student
at the University of New England Of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM),
Bidderford, ME, participated recently in the College’s annual White Coat
Ceremony to formerly recognize the transition students made from lay
persons to those assuming the responsibility of physicians.
The evening ceremony was held at the Holiday Inn By the Bay in
Portland, Maine, on Thursday, October 9, 2008. Even highlights included
presentation of the white coats by members of the physician community;
remarks by Dr. Gerald Osborn, D.O., M.Phil., Professor and Chair of
Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, Lincoln Memorial University, DeBusk
College of Osteopathic Medicine; brief remarks by second-year medical
student Tyler Raymond, president of the Student Osteopathic Medical
Association (SOMA); and the reading of the Osteopathic Oath by Polly
Leonard, D.O. ‘95 UNECOM, president of the UNECOM Alumni Board. A
reception to honor the Class of 2012 followed.
The White Coat Ceremony was an idea conceived by the Arnold P. Gold
Foundation to create a psychological contact for professionalism and
empathy in medicine. The first White Coat Ceremony took place in 1993 at
Columbia’s College of Physicians and Surgeons. Since then, more than 100
other medical schools in the U.S. and Abroad have initiated a similar
ceremony.
The University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine is Maine’s
only medical school and the only osteopathic medical school in New
England. The College has several times been ranked among the top 50
medical schools in the nation for primary care education by U.S. News
and World Report, and has been further recognized by that publication
for educational excellence in geriatric and rural medicine.

Emergency
Changes To Northwood’s Recycling
Starting Saturday, November 15th
As we have
watched the price of gasoline go down, most of us probably didn’t notice
the price of recyclables going down as well. But they have, and to save
the town money, we will need to make some changes quickly.
Right now no vendor will pay us for our plastics and they are charging
us for the hauling. Until this current financial situation plays itself
out, and recyclables have a price on the market again, we are making the
following changes:
All your plastics (#1-#7) without the caps will go into the compacter on
the LEFT.
Your household (wet waste) will go into the compacter on the RIGHT.
Clean tin will go back into bin #2.
Glass will go back to the glass pit.
The Recycling Committee is exploring all options to keep our town
recycling plastics, tin, and glass, and is trying to keep the cost to a
minimum. We’d like to thank you for your quick response in changing the
way you recycled plastics. The response was great and we hope to get
back to the one stop method very soon.
We thank you for your patience and understanding.
