School News
Wellness Committee presents another in their Family Fun Night series to
increase physical activity in students and parents:
December 11 - Family Fun Night Basketball:
Grades K - 2, 6:00 - 7:00
Grades 3 - 5, 7:15 - 8:15
Parents play with students.
Clean sneakers required.
Students in Mrs. Gibson and Mrs. Kramas’ first grades studied the First
Thanksgiving. As part of their studies they learned about cranberries and
where and how they grow. Then they tried fresh cranberries, some students
liked them, while others found them to be quite sour. They tried dried
cranberries, a bit tastier, and finally they made cranberry sauce, best
tasting of all. Each child was able to bring home some cranberry sauce to
share with their families on Thanksgiving.
World Language News
Mrs. Shoup is excited to finally see the second graders! We will continue
our introduction to the Spanish language this year. Each child will be
receiving vocabulary flashcards to review the numbers, colors, body parts
and hobbies that we learned together last year. I hope that it will be both
exciting and helpful for parents to review some of the flashcards with the
children once or twice a week at home. Let the boys and girls impress you
with their vocabulary! They are developing wonderful little accents!
As an extension to our home life unit, the eighth grade Spanish students
will be creating and talking about their dream homes as a December project.
They have been writing weekly journals and continually adding to their 50+
page speaking portfolios as well. I cannot believe how far these students
have come! They have been able to go for more than 35 consecutive minutes in
class without speaking English!
Mrs. Folan’s and Mrs. Cronin’s homerooms are winding down with their World
Language Related Arts classes. The fifth graders will be sharing some of
their language with the sixth grade Music class on the last day of the
rotation. I am so proud of them!
Seventh grade Spanish students have been busy researching Hispanic artists.
Their class work continues to be top-quality. They can already greet and
introduce each other and talk about weather, date, classes, personality
traits, hobbies, time and school supplies!
Please contact Mrs. Shoup ([email protected])
if you have any interesting French or Spanish cultural experiences that you
would like to share with the Northwood students.

Historical Society Holds Annual Meeting
Local history
buffs have a greater knowledge of postcards, including their production and
collection, from an informative talk given by George Shattuck at the recent
Northwood Historical Society meeting.
Members and friends of the Northwood Historical Society were able to view
firsthand the recently restored interior of the Community Center in the
Narrows while enjoying an assortment of pot luck entrees and desserts at the
Society’s November meeting. With over 30 people in attendance, the evening
began with a general introduction of attendees, followed by the presenting
of the secretary’s and treasurer’s reports.
Guest speaker George Shattuck gave an interesting and educational
presentation on deltiology-the study and collection of postcards. George
operates On The Hill Collectables, where he specializes in vintage postcards
and related supplies. The shop, located at Denmark Drive and Rt. 4 has over
200,000 postcards in stock. George gave an informative overview of the
history of how postcards came into use; the printing process; and explained
the six different types of postcards. He also explained how to determine
whether a postcard is a true “real photo” card, a term often misused by
sellers.
Town Historian Jo Ann Bailey handed out certificates of appreciation to many
local contractors, businesses and individuals who helped with the
renovations of the Community Center. She gave a history of the building,
once thought beyond saving, which is now believed to have served as one of
the town’s schoolhouses. Many of the people in attendance shared pleasant
memories they had of past events at the Community Center building and
excitement over seeing the restoration work that has been completed.

Seniors To Donate $1,000 To Local Food Pantries
WHAT: Coe-Brown Northwood Academy’s senior class has elected to donate its
class funds to two local food banks. The Northwood Food Pantry and the
Strafford Food Pantry will each receive $500 from the Class of 2009, for a
total donation from these students of $1,000.
WHO: Coe-Brown senior class officers will present donation checks to
representatives from the two food pantries. Class advisors Jennifer Cullen
and Jill Forward, both teachers at CBNA, will also be present.
WHEN: Thursday, December 11, 2008, at 3 p.m. Refreshments will be served!
WHERE: Coe-Brown Northwood Academy, 907 First New Hampshire Turnpike,
Northwood, New Hampshire. The presentation will take place in the
multi-purpose room. Check in at the main office upon arriving at Coe-Brown.
WHY: Coe-Brown Northwood Academy’s mission includes instilling a sense of
civic responsibility in its students. The definition of a Coe-Brown graduate
reads, in part, “The Coe-Brown graduate will demonstrate individual
responsibility in the home and community.” In accordance with this
philosophy, classes routinely conduct a number of activities during their
four years at the Academy, both for fun and for the purpose of raising
money. Funds raised by dues and activities are typically used for class
trips and gifts. Dissemination of these funds is determined by each class
during the senior year.
