The Friends Of The Northwood Library
The
Friends of the Northwood Library will present “Humor and Harmony II:
Springtime Edition” featuring Rebecca Rule and Cordwood at the
Northwood School on Route 4 in Northwood on Saturday, May 2, from
7:00-9:00 p.m.
Suggested donation is $5.00 per person at the door. Baked goods and
coffee will be available for purchase. All proceeds will benefit the
Chesley Memorial Library’s children and adult programs.
Rebecca Rule, aka the Moose of Humor, is a humorist/writer who
specializes in funny stories about New Hampshire. You never know
what is going to happen once the lies, uh, stories start flying. Her
CDs are “Better Than a Poke in the Eye” and “Perley Gets a Dump
Sticker.” Her latest book is “Live Free And Eat Pie: A Storyteller’s
Guide to New Hampshire.”
Cordwood is a bluegrass and folk quartet made up of instrumental,
vocal, and recording artists from Northwood, Strafford, and
Deerfield. This is not your local neighborhood hobby band. They are
a fine group of seasoned New England musicians. Each can hold his or
her own at field picking or a back stage jam, and yet, as a band,
they present a highly polished on-stage performance. All four
members of Cordwood are storytellers and songwriters, creating
original material for instrumentalists who can sing and harmonize,
sometimes taking the lead vocal, other times hanging back and
lending two, three, ore even four part harmonies to a song. Cordwood
provides a unique sound to both originals and the covers they
perform. Their tunes remain heartfelt and down-home. The band’s
material is a mixture of traditional bluegrass, folk, and swing.
Cordwood is Wini Young on banjo and guitar, Walk Kutylowski on
bass, Al Pratt on guitar, and Bob Young on mandolin, names you may
remember from Big Chicken, The Deerfield Coffeehouse Band and Fat
Hands.
News from the Northwood School Board
On
Monday, April 13, the Northwood School was named a 2009 New
Hampshire School of Excellence. The awards for outstanding K-8,
elementary, middle, and secondary schools are determined by criteria
developed by the New Hampshire Excellence in Education Awards Board
of Directors and applied by selection committees made up of
educators and community leaders. The committees study school
applications and assess schools based on presentations and on-site
visitations. Only one school at each of the four levels may be
recognized each year. It is a great honor to receive this award.
In
addition to being named a New Hampshire School of Excellence, the
Northwood School made “adequate yearly growth” (AYP) for the second
year in a row. This achievement means that the Northwood School is
no longer considered “a school in need of improvement!”
The
School Board would like to thank and congratulate administration,
staff, students, parents, and community members for these two
impressive achievements. It is the combined effort of all everyone
that allows us to live our mission statement: The mission of the
Northwood School is to inspire students to be lifelong learners. As
a community we are committed to providing a safe, challenging
environment that encourages all students to aspite to excellence.
Congratulations to all!

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day
Have you been spring
cleaning and come across items that you are unsure of how to dispose
of or know they cannot be accepted at the town transfer station? The
Household Hazardous Waste Day is designed to provide a safe way to
dispose of many products found in the house, garage, workshop, etc.
Collection Day is Saturday, May 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at
the Turnkey Landfill, Rochester Neck Road, Rochester.
A product
is hazardous when its use or disposal poses a threat to your health
or the environment. Hazardous products may contain the words:
flammable, corrosive, explosive or toxic on the product label. This
includes but is not limited to: weed killers, poisons, insecticides,
drain cleaners, fuel additives, antifreeze, creosote, transmission
fluid, oil or enamel based paints, paint removers, glues, solvents,
etc. You are allowed to bring up to 10 gallons of allowed products
to the collection site.
This special collection day is for
residents of Northwood and other designated towns only. If you have
questions about Collection Day or would like directions to Turnkey
Landfill call the City of Rochester at 332-4096 or NHDES at

day, including a list of what should be disposed of and a map to the
site is available at the Northwood Town Hall during regular business
hours Monday-Friday 8-4.
Let’s do our part to keep these
products disposed of in a safe manner that will keep them out of
storm drains, septic systems or landfills that can contaminate
ground and surface waters.
