A Taste of Local Restaurant Lore
By
Ellyn Schreiber Did you know that Lakeview Antique Center used to
be Hudson’s Restaurant? And before that, it was The Oxbow, which
started as a clam shack. In fact, “back in the day”, there were at
least 4 clam shacks along Lakeshore Drive in Northwood, and at one
time, a ballroom (the Roseland Ballroom), that doubled as a
roller-skating rink during the afternoon!
Did
you know that Lakeshore Farm first opened its doors in 1926? The
Watson family began to take in boarders for extra money, having been
told that Mr. Watson had a heart condition and could “go any
minute”? He lived to be 93. The Lakeshore Farm Barn did not
fare so well. In 1979, it was severely damaged in a fire which
started during a snowmobile water cross event. It was just luck that
protected the 3,000 (yes, 3,000) spectators from potential disaster.
Fuel tanks, located nearby did not explode, and all were safe.
Johnson’s Dairy Bar opened as a ice cream stand in 1955, and quickly
expanded due to popular demand, but until recent ownership, the
restaurant did not have a proper kitchen. All the food was prepared
up at Johnson’s farm house, and brought down to the restaurant for
serving! Judging by the number of life-long romances sparked at
various restaurants across town, there were more than biscuits
cooking in those kitchens!
A
good time, excellent food and camaraderie was had by all at the
community potluck dinner held by the Northwood Historical Society
and the Northwood Recreation Committee on April 19, 2009.
Towards the end of the evening, Arlene Johnson reflected about the
early years of restaurant business in Northwood, commenting, “We
didn’t make a lot of money, but we made a lot of friends.”
And
many friends, old and new, came together at this event. More than 45
people filled the Northwood Community Hall, sharing a meal and their
memories of local restaurants of yesteryear. The Northwood
Historical Society and The Northwood Recreation Committee would like
to thank all those who contributed to the success of this event; all
of the participants who brought food, friendship and stories, the
committee members who planned, set up and cleaned up, and
Hannaford’s, Chadbourn’s and Johnson’s Dairy Bar for their generous
support. “Lastly, thank you to all who donated nonperishable goods
which were collected to benefit the Northwood Food Pantry.

Woman’s Club will be honored at a GLWC-NH special luncheon on May
15. Elaine Covey and Leona Kubera will be recognized for their
outstanding service to their local club.
The
Harvey Lake Woman’s Club Reciprocity Day on April 7 was a resounding
success. Twenty eight guests from Somersworth, Strafford, Pembroke
and Deerfield attended a program provided by the Coe-Brown Music
Department followed by a lavish tea.
The
May 5th meeting will feature a Baby Shower for Concord Hospital.
Members are asked to bring useful supplies for newborns and new or
very gently used clothing. The program will be provided by Pat
Cowhig of the Electric Florist.
