NALMC
Discovery Day Thank You
The following letter was sent to NALMC in
appreciation of the recent Discovery Day event.
Dear Folks,
Over the years, our paths through life have been fair at times,
rocky at others, and we’ve had our mountains to climb, but on July
11, 2009, in the Northwood Meadows State Park, the recognition we
received, the many hands extended in gratitude, and words spoken in
appreciation, were rather overwhelming. For once in our lifetime, we
walked the golden mile, and we thank you for that opportunity.
The amount of work that went into the affair, and the most favorable
results, were all rather hard to comprehend. The presentations we
received will be placed on the wall in our home, and treasured
always.
We give a very special thanks to the Crankpullers for
their remembrance of our son, Fred. It was a very kind and personal
touch. Again, a heartfelt thank you.
Most Sincerely, Ann and
Ed Burtt

Northwood Lake Quality - Volunteers Important
At the Annual
Meeting of the Northwood Lake Watershed Association, held July 18 at
the Northwood Town Hall, Sara Steiner told members how important
volunteers are to healthy lakes.
Sara Steiner is the Volunteer
Lake Assessment Program (VLAP) Coordinator from New Hampshire’s
Department of Environmental Services.
She was the featured
speaker at the meeting. Sara coordinates a volunteer program to
monitor lakes and ponds in NH. There are close to 900 lakes and
ponds with nine coordinators (biologists) in the state.
They
rely heavily on volunteers to monitor the water quality in the
state. Trained volunteers collect water samples and keeps the DES
informed of activities occurring within the watershed. DES uses this
data to report to EPA on the status of lakes and ponds in NH . VLAP
was established in 1985.
Northwood Lake is not currently
impaired, but constant monitoring is necessary. All tributaries
going into the lake are monitored once a month in the summer (May
through September). This allows viewing of turnover, spring rains
and snow melt and how these affect the lake.
Abutters are
reminded to use low phosphorus fertilizer and cleansing products.
The new officers and directors elected at the meeting were:
Secretary, Joe Randazzo; Treasurer, Helen Ash; Director, Andrea,
Tomlinson; Director. Marie Damon; Director, Marilyn, Payne.
President, Jim Vaillancourt, reported that Northwood Lake had 33
acres treated with 24D for the milfoil problem last year The big
patches of milfoil are not here this year. We can now deal with
individual plants.
