What do
you get when you put all these items together? The beginning of a
community garden at the Northwood School.
The
idea was generated a couple months ago by 5th grade students
participating in a leadership group. The main goal of the leadership
groups in grades 5-8 at Northwood is “What can you do to give back
to your community?” It can be their classroom, school or town
community. Earlier this year all the leadership groups participated
in a food/hygiene drive for the Northwood food pantry, collecting
over 1500 items. Since then each group has been challenged to do
something at their individual grade level.
The 5th
grade students chose to start a school store and a community garden.
The school store is still in the planning phase, but the garden has
been planted! Thanks to Cavarretta Gardens in Northwood (located
right on 1st NH Turnpike) for donating squash, beans, and a couple
tomato plants to start the project.
On May
31st in 90 degree heat the students cleared weeds, turned the soil
with the 1 pitchfork, planted the veggies and watered them to begin
what may become a multi-year project. Their goal is to donate the
produce to the local food pantry and possibly the soup kitchen. They
are also planning to carry on this project until their 8th grade
year where they will then turn it over to the 5th grade with the
hope that it will become a mainstay at the school for years to come.
When
the students finished the project they were able to celebrate with
Popsicles that were brought in by Mr. And Mrs. Thoms.
Not to
be forgotten are the other leadership groups who are doing projects
such as a theme school dance with the proceeds to go to charity, a
food drive that will go until the end of the school year, and
support for the 8th grade trip. More to come on these projects as
they progress.
